When you pick health insurance through work in the US, HMO plans are usually much cheaper than PPO plans. That’s why a lot of people end up on the basic, cheapest HMO plan their company offers. I’m one of them.
The problem shows up the moment you actually get hurt or sick. Try to book with your primary care doctor and you might wait a month at best, two months at worst. By then the illness has either gotten worse, or you’ve already recovered by the time you see the doctor. Honestly, it’s kind of ridiculous.
That’s Why I Turn to Urgent Care
So the place I end up using a lot is Urgent Care. It’s not the ER, but you can get the care and treatment you need that same day, and even get a prescription.
The catch is that everyone has the same idea. So many people show up that I once waited 4–5 hours just to see a doctor. Still, when you’re sick you want to see someone that day, so every time I find myself wondering what the best move is.
The Trick: Go 1 Hour Before Closing
But there’s a trick to it. If you go to Urgent Care about an hour before it closes, it’s usually pretty quiet.
My HMO through work is in the PIH hospital network, and PIH has its own Urgent Care. When I get there an hour before closing, check-in takes less than 5 minutes, and I usually see a doctor within 10–15 minutes. Compared to the days of waiting hours, it’s a whole different world.
Check These Before You Go
- First make sure the Urgent Care is in your HMO network. You can find this on your insurance card or your insurer’s app.
- Closing times vary by location, so check that day’s hours on Google Maps or the clinic’s website.
- If you cut it too close they may stop taking check-ins, so about an hour before is just right.
- For serious symptoms like chest pain or trouble breathing, skip Urgent Care and go straight to the ER.
Wrapping Up
I think this is the best way to get the most out of the cheapest insurance plan. If you’re on an HMO, give it a try next time you’re sick.
