Dessert Review: Porto’s Hidden Gem, the Dulce de Leche Cake Roll and Its Rich Caramel Temptation
Today I want to introduce a life-changing cake I brought home from Porto’s, a bakery I absolutely love: the Dulce De Leche Cake Roll.
When people think of Porto’s, cheese rolls or potato balls usually come to mind first, but one bite of this cake roll will completely change your mind.

First impressions and texture
The moment you open the box, the glossy caramel-colored coating catches your eye. You can probably tell from the photo, but Porto’s signature dulce de leche covering the outside has a beautiful sheen.
The real surprise is the texture. It’s made with almond sponge cake, so it’s much nuttier than regular cake and has a pleasantly moist, melt-in-your-mouth feel. Inside, it’s packed with soft whipped cream and rich dulce de leche custard.
What makes it so good
The standout for me was the topping cream. It’s similar to caramel but with a much deeper, richer flavor, and the bittersweet dark chocolate drizzle keeps it from getting too sweet. One bite and you’ll immediately want a cup of coffee.
About Porto’s Bakery
Porto’s is a Southern California institution, a Cuban-style bakery. It currently has locations in Glendale, Burbank, Northridge, Downey, Buena Park, West Covina, and more. It’s famous for its always-long lines, but the taste is worth it.
Final thoughts
Desserts that are only sweet get old fast, but this cake roll balances the nutty almond flavor and caramel so well that I enjoyed it down to the last piece. It looks great enough for a family gathering or a party, too.
If you visit Porto’s, I recommend trying this cake roll in addition to their famous pastries.
